Choosing and Wearing
Gemstones
|
Once a proper stone is obtained it may be set in
either a ring or pendant for wearing on the body.
The gem must be set in such a way that the stone
comes into contact with the skin. Gems should be set
by themselves, as certain gems are incompatible and
may cause undesired effects if set together in the
same piece of jewelry. There are exceptions in the
case of specific talismans where certain gems are
set together for a positive combined effect.
It's also important to wear gemstone rings on the
proper fingers. The forefinger (next to thumb) is
the Jupiter finger and yellow sapphire is best worn
here. The middle finger is the Saturn finger, so
blue sapphire should be worn here. The "ring finger"
(next to smallest finger) is for the Sun, Moon, and
Mars so ruby, pearl, and red coral rings are best
worn here. The smallest finger is the Mercury finger
so this is the optimum place for rings of emerald or
green jade. In palmistry the thumb is connected to
the "mound of Venus". However, as we don't generally
wear rings on the thumb, diamonds or white sapphire
rings should go on a friendly planet's finger,
either middle finger (Saturn), or the small finger
(Mercury). Hessonite ( gomed) and cat's-eye are also
worn on either the small or middle fingers. Pendants
are best worn at either the throat chakra or the
heart chakra for maximum effect.
The size of gems is also an important factor. Most
of the precious primary gems are "facet-cut" and
transparent. These include ruby, emerald, diamond,
sapphires and hessonite. They should be over one
carat and are better two carats or more in weight.
Rubies and diamonds are so potent that at least one
carat can be sufficient. (There are five carats to a
gram of weight). Pearls are chosen of a size and
weight depending on body weight. Generally I have
found that 5 carats is very potent. Red coral
generally needs to be minimum 6 to 8 carats, and
cat's-eye minimum 3 carats.
Although some gems can seem an expensive
proposition, the exercise is usually a one-time
purchase and the gem can be worn for an entire
lifetime. What other commodity can continue to be
useful, effective and increase pleasure and well
being throughout the entire span of life?

Science of Planetary
Gemology
|
The Science of Planetary Gemology is one that has
been used in accordance with astrology for thousands
of years. It is the science of understanding how
gemstones transmit and reflect planetary rays, and
how they will increase planetary influences in a
person’s life.
Different gemstones are said to receive their
potencies from the cosmic energies of various
planets. Vedic astrology and the Ayurvedic system of
medicine tell us that certain planets can have
effects on bodily organs and parts of the body. The
planets are also said to have effects on our minds
and subtle parts of our consciousness. In addition,
their specific positions in the horoscope indicate
(to a duly qualified practitioner of this great
science) the path of destiny.
There is a school of thought wherein some
astrologers posit that wearing a gem for a planet
which causes suffering due to unfortunate
positioning at the time of a person’s birth will
‘propitiate’ that planet or cause it to give less
trouble. Extensive experience in this field,
however, has proven this idea to be a misconception.
Gems never ‘decrease’ a planet’s energy or its
cosmic rays. Therefore the recommendation of any gem
must be given a great deal of concentrated thought
by the astrologer in order to determine whether a
gemstone will truly have a positive effect on
someone. Mistakes can be costly if malefic cosmic
rays are unintentionally increased. Therefore it is
only sensible that a conscientious astrologer who
recommends gems to his or her clients will carefully
study the science of planetary gemology in order to
correctly prescribe gems.
This is not a science that can be used only by Vedic
astrologers. Western astrologers can also learn
planetary gemology in order to give viable remedial
measures to their clients for mitigating or
lessening malefic influences and increasing benefic
influences. This is achieved by strengthening
planets that can counteract certain rays that are
causing problems, or by strengthening planets that
rule positive areas of life but are simply weakened
due to their placement in the horoscope.
The "sidereal" zodiac must be used by an astrologer,
east or west, for diagnosing a horoscope to
prescribe gems. This system is based on the fixed
positions of stars and constellations, not the
relativity to earth and sun as is the "tropical"
zodiac. Gemstone therapy may not be applied to the
tropical positions or great mistakes will be made in
recommendations. Gem therapy is a powerful tool and
remedial measure. In some instances wearing the
wrong gem can cause serious physical and/or mental
problems. Indeed, gemstone recommendations should
only be accepted from a duly qualified Vedic
astrologer, planetary gemologist, or ayurvedic
practitioner well versed in this science.

Benefits of Gem Therapy
|
The proper stone can bestow fantastic benefits.
There should also be a strong meditation by the
wearer of the results desired before beginning its
use. Even in children, where the parents are the
ones devoting all the mental energy, we have seen
dramatic improvements. The use of pearls with young
children has been shown to be effective in helping
to calm hyperactivity. It seems to make them think
with more clarity.
The practice of indiscriminate placing of gems on
the body, especially this new age practice of gem
crystals all over the body, is dangerous. Herbs or
medicines would not be indiscriminately taken
without consultation with a doctor or health
practitioner, and the use of gems and crystals
should be taken as seriously. Improper use of
gemstones can short-circuit magnetic fields of the
subtle body and can result in severe physical
debility in some cases.
The medical and astrological uses validate each
other. Different planets have influence on different
parts of our bodies. A weak planet in the chart
often manifests physically as a weakness in the part
of the body affected by that planet’s cosmic energy.
Gems have great power to harmonize planetary
influences.

Power of Gems
|
Gems’ earliest use was for healing and spiritual
ritual. Their value as concentrated wealth came into
play at a much later time. Although gems were rare
and exhibited great beauty, the reason they were so
precious was the power they imparted to their
wearers. They are storehouses of power that may be
transmitted through contact with one’s body. Kings
and queens would have gemstones set in their crowns
to obtain their potencies. They connected the
monarchs with forces enabling them to rule guided by
cosmic energies. Priests of different religions used
gems in rings for similar reasons. Gems exhibit
their power in a beneficial or detrimental way
depending on how they are used.
Ancient cultures used gems and sound vibration to
direct the subtle forces of nature. The occult power
of gems is said to have caused natural calamities by
improper usage, such as the destruction of Atlantis.
They are said to have been the catalyst for moving
the great, huge blocks of stone used to build the
pyramids of Egypt.
The inherent powers of gemstones are recognized by
modern science in the technological uses of crystals
in watches, lasers, and computers, but the more
subtle potencies, such as their ability to promote
physical healing in the body, and their power to
help balance human emotions, elude discovery by
modern science.

Gemstones and the Vedas
|
Since ancient times India has been a source of gems
and the knowledge of their uses. They were valued
for healing, and for spiritual reasons. Their use as
an ornament was of secondary importance. Gems were
known to increase the flow of different energies.
Individuals would use them both for their own
personal uses, and in places where many could
benefit from their energies, as in temples dedicated
to God.
Gems are the life force of the mineral kingdom. In
the Vedic texts on astrology, there is information
on how the different gems are actually storehouses
of the different energies radiated to earth by the
other planets in our solar system. They are the
means of connection between the earth and the other
stars and planets. They are connectors between the
physical energies and the subtle ones. Therefore
their usage harnesses specific energies to help in
many ways to enhance the overall quality of life.

What
is a Jyotish or Ayurvedic Quality Gemstone?
|
Jyotish is the sanskrit name for vedic astrology,
meaning "science of light". Ayurveda is the Indian
system of medicine meaning "science of life". For
gems to be capable of transmitting cosmic planetary
rays that may enhance physical, emotional, or
spiritual health or attract positive influences
toward a person, they must first of all be natural.
This means they are created by tectonic pressure
within the earth over time periods up to millions of
years. Synthetic gems are created in a laboratory
within a matter of days to weeks and do not have the
capability to absorb, reflect or transmit cosmic
radiation. They are not effective for any type of
healing whatsoever.
Gems also transmit cosmic colors that are in turn
absorbed by the chakra centers in the ethereal body
and therefore they must be of good quality in
clarity. Otherwise there may be some disturbance in
the transmission of these rays that would alter the
effect and sometimes even create an undesirable
effect. Therefore we choose gems that are from
"eye-clean", meaning a minimum of inclusions within
the stone, to flawless, meaning no imperfections are
visible to the eye at all.
An expert planetary gemologist knows what types of
inclusions are permissible in a jyotish gemstone and
which alter the cosmic radiation emanating from the
gemstone. The more flawless a gem, and the greater
saturation of color throughout, the greater its
value. This amounts to the rarity and world supply
of any given gemstone.
Gems must not be heat-treated to enhance color or
clarity, nor irradiated or treated in any way to
improve their appearance. It is a fact that 98% of
all sapphires and rubies are heat-treated, as well
as certain other stones, and many other stones are
treated in some way, such as irradiation, to improve
their appearance. In some cases heat-treated gems,
such as rubies or blue sapphires, may still be very
expensive as in the jewelry trade it is accepted and
does not reduce the value. For jyotish or ayurvedic
usage this nullifies their inherent potencies and
effectively "kills" the gemstone.

Relationship between Gems & Human Body
|
The five fundamental elements of the cosmos are also
the same in our human body. If balanced in
proportion they keep the body healthy through the
sun-rays. The same elements are found in the gems
which are as follows :-
There is the fire element in Ruby and Coral; the
water element in Pearl and Diamond; the earth
element in Emerald; the sky element in Yellow
Sapphire and the air element in Blue Sapphire.
These mysterious and colored gems have great
influencing and charming effect on human life. On
the basis of purity and hardness, they have been
performing great deeds by lessening the malefic
effects of planets over the human life and they
bring harmony in the good and bad effects of
planets.
Each and every gem is extremely radioactive and has
the capacity to attract the special cosmic rays
towards it. Planetary tremors influence our
sensitive sinews or veins. Our classics (mythology)
tell us that the position of planets in the solar
and lunar systems at the time of child's birth
influence every child throughout life. Sometimes the
weak influence of planets and stars create imbalance
in life. The wearing of gems after proper
astrological consideration of one's horoscope, can
save mental imbalance, physical suffering and
financial obstacles. In this way gems serve as our
armor and body guard.
IN human body the Sun represents the soul, the moon
mind, the Mars perseverance, the Mercury voice, the
Jupiter Wisdom (learning), the Venus Love, the
Saturn sobriety , thoughtfulness. These planets
influence human life and body continuously. In
addition to these planets there are two shadow
planets (Rahu and Ketu) whose effect is also seen in
life.
In Tantra Sara, a famous tantrik scripture, the
human body is stated to be an island of nine gems.
These nine gems correspond with the nine metal
constituents (dhatus) of which the human body in
constituted. The gems related with the nine
ingredients (dhatus) are : - Flesh - Yellow
Sapphire, Hair - Blue Sapphire, Skin - Cat's Eye,
Blood - Coral, Bone - Pearl, Marrow - Emerald, Fat -
Hessonite (Gomed), Semen - Diamond, Vitality (Life
Force) - Ruby.
Gems work with both kinds of energy - physico
chemical i.e. electrochemical ; and pranic, i.e.,
the vital life force - weather they are used as
Jewellery or taken orally as pastes or oxides as
Bhasmas of the gems.
Wearing of these gems influences the dhatus and the
psycho physical well-being in human life. The
Puranas present beautiful stories about the origin
of gems that convey the utility of the gems. The
Karma Purana states that gems were created from the
seven different kinds of rays of light emanating
from the seven major planets of our solar system.
These rays were transmitted in the seven colors of
the rainbow : Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow,
Orange and Red. These seven rays of light are
responsible for all the cosmic existences in the
cosmos, including the human body. Colors are the
frequencies of light in different bands, and
therefore they emit energy in different forms, which
directly influences human body and consciousness.
There are hot and cold colors and colors that are
neutral ( neither hot nor cold). Hot colors
increase heat, which results in arrogance and anger,
cold colors bring calmness in life system. The
neutral colors produce pleasant feelings and joy.
The chemical nature of gems brings them in close
contact with man. They are crystals of clear and
purified chemicals that are also found in the human
body. Their contact with the electromagnetic field
of the body becomes easy when they are embedded in
pure electrolytes like copper, silver, and gold,
used in rings worn between two joints of our
fingers. Joints are naturally the most sensitive
parts of our body, where the network of nerve fibers
and the lymphatic fluid is the most concentrated.
The nerve fibers and the lymphatic fluid together
serve as the assimilators of energy emitted by the
gems. With their slight and constant contact with
the skin, they bring changes in the body chemistry
by their interaction with the body's energy field,
which is permeated by a complex electromagnetic
field.
Ancient Scriptures from across the world have
appraised gems as powerful agents of energy that
influence human fate and destiny, induce good
energy, and expel the negative energy that causes
sickness, suffering and psychosis. Gems brings
peace, prosperity and happiness. Favorable gems
bring about name, fame and power and make life
comfortable and prosperous.
Gems, as storehouses of divine energy, are used for
carving objects of worship, idols, rosaries,
talismans (Yantras), amulets, pendulums and so
forth. They were also used for mandalas and pots
used for offering the holy water or keeping the
offerings for concentration. Lingams and Yantras in
Pyramid shape are made of Sphatik (quartz). We
believe that Yantras carved on stone or Rudraksha
give siddhi (power to achieve the desired goal)
quicker that a rosary made of other beads.
